Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, known in English as Pompey, was a leading Roman general and statesman. Pompey was a valiant and successful general in his youth, which enabled him to directly acquire greater political power. In 60 BC, Pompey joined Crassus and Caesar in an alliance known as the First Triumvirate. After Crassus' death, discord developed between Caesar and Pompey, which later escalated into a civil war. After Pompey's defeat in the civil war, he fled to Egypt, where he was assassinated and died on the day before his 58th birthday.
