Belisarius was a military commander of the Byzantine Empire under the emperor Justinian I. One of the defining features of Belisarius' career was his success in various war battles. Belisarius is believed to be born in Germania. Belisarius was once the head of a bodyguard regiment, who then managed to suppress the Nika riots and saved the emperor Justinian from peril. In 533, Belisarius began a campaign against the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa, and seized its king. As he returned home, Belisarius was honored with governorship. In 535 Belisarius landed in Sicily and took the island in order to use it as a base against Italy. Later in 540 Belisarius managed to take the city of Ravenna and seize the Gothic king.In 562, Belisarius stood trial in Constantinople, having been accused of participating in a conspiracy against Justinian, and was sent to prison, but set free in the next year. Belisarius died in 565 at the age of 61. The cavalry he established was heavily armored and equipped with German spears and Persian bows and arrows, which later formed the nucleus of armies Byzantine Empire.
