IN 1944, the US Navy finds itself beset by the Japanese in the Pacific. You are a navy pilot attached to the USS Wasp. The Wasp has been heavily damaged, and is trying to reach safety, but is hindered by Axis forces on islands, as well as enemy ships and fighters. Flying a F6F, you are to engage targets in order to ensure the safety of the ship.
At the start of the game, you pick a rank to play, with higher ranks obviously offering more difficult and longer missions. When you established the difficulty level, your next choice will be which weapon(s) to take. You can pick between Bombs, Rockets, or a single Torpedo.
The controls are relatively simply. In order to take off from the ship, you hold down either the LEFT, or the RIGHT arrow key. Once your tail lifts, keep holding down the arrow key, and press UP in order to make the plane fly up. Holding down the direction and DOWN does the opposite, and makes the plane fly down.
While flying, tapping the button in the opposite direction you're flying will slow the plane, while hitting the arrow of the direction you're going to will speed up the plane. Turning the plane around is achieved by hitting the opposite arrow button. Holding down SPACE fires your machine gun, while you will drop bombs, rockets or your torpedo by tapping SPACE.
If you run out of bombs, or your plane is shot to the extent your plane starts smoking, and the oil level starts dropping, you can always return to the carrier in order to get repairs and a restock of your weapons. In order to do so, you need top approach the ship from the opposite direction you took off from (against the wind). Align your plane at the same height as the deck of the ship, and then hit UP as you fly over the arresting gear (identified as 4 loops on the right-side of the deck).
Landing will take effort and practise (I spent about 45 minutes before managing a single attempt). Once the plane is on the carrier deck, taxi it over to the elevator, and then use SPACE to get it repaired and re-armed. CTRL + G will allow you to save your game when you're on the carrier.
In order to run the game, do NOT run install.exe (it will end up prompting for a Disk B, which does not exist, and you'll have to close DOSBOX altogether), or WINGS.COM (which fires up an ASCII art screen, but then prevents any of the other executables from working).
Instead, run the game using WOFC (for CGA), WOFE (for EGA) or WOFT (Tandy).
Should the game run too fast for your liking, remember that you can use the DOSBOX commands CTRL+F11 to slow things down.
