We join our favorite janitor who, following his adventure in Space Quest IV, apparently managed to become captain of his own ship. It becomes quickly apparent, though, that it's just a simuilation, and Roger is currently a cadet, triying to make his way through the StarCon academy. We quickly find out it's not going too well. Luckily, Roger manages to cheat his way through the tests, and is given command of the SCS Eureka, a garbage scow.
While in command, he is ordered to collect waste from floating around space. During one of those cleaning missions, he is confronted by a robot chasing him for stealing a whistle in Space Quest II. Roger manages to deal with her, and him and the crew retreat to the Spacebar for some well-deserved R&R.
However, he ends up running into one of his superiors who had it out for him all along, and his engineer Cliffy will be locked in prison. After rescuing Cliffy, and destroying the bar in the process, Roger finds himself on a desert planet, where he is assaulted by a mutated colonist. This puts you on the trail of a substance that is responsible for turning people into terrible mutants.
Back aboard the ship, the Eureka receives a distress signal from the StarCon flagship The Goliath. Roger is ordered to investigate the situation, and ends up rescuing Ambassador Wankmeister, who was shown to him at the end of Space Quest IV. She explains that the crew of The Goliath got infected by the primordial soup.
Can you help Roger stop the Goliath from further spreading the mutation to the entire universe?
Space Quest V is filled with nods to famous Star Trek episodes, and all sorts of other Sci-Fi easter-eggs. His pet Spike, resembles a face-hugger from Alien. The Android chasing him seems to have a similar shoulder-mounted rocket launcher as the alien from Predator, and of course, when Roger merges with a fly that entered the transporter, it's a nod to the movie The Fly. And the final showdown somehow seems like a reference to The Blob.
GOG Offers Space Quest 4, 5, and 6 bundled for $9.99. On Steam, you can get the Space Quest Collection for $19.99 (which includes Space Quest 4, 5, and 6).
