You are Brian, a child of the vikings. While you were away to collect herbs for your master, the evil god Loki summoned a whirlwind that destroyed your village, and captured everyone in it to the halls of Valhalla. Odin shares what happened, and informs you that prophecies predicted this, and that only you can free your people. In order to do so, you will have to rid the world of the evil servants of Loki.
Starting your quest, you will have to make your way through a number of levels, in order to reach Valhalla and battle Loki himself. You have a limited amount of health (in the form of hearts), and you are on a timer. When the hourglass is empty (around 30 seconds or so), you lose a heart.
You can find gold and gems by killing enemies, or uncovering hidden bonuses (typically by jumping to reveal the bonuses). In shops (identified by doors), you can purchase health, or a variety of buffs. In later levels, you will also be able to upgrade your sword, providing you with more reach and thus the ability to stay further away from enemies.
Purchasable weapons come in many forms: Bombs can be thrown straight upwards, while bolas fly in the direction you are looking. There's also little fire sprites, which are like a homing missile, in that they will actively seek out enemies on the screen. Lighting bolts will damage all enemies on the screen, while a potion outright kills them. You can also purchase an extra life (which looks like a miniature version of Brian), or temporary buffs, like the ability to glide (rather than fall), a cloak of invincibility (meaning you can clobber the enemies, but they cannot hurt you), or a speed buff, allowing you to run faster.
However, some doors will lead to Boss monsters, so be careful out there! Boss monsters typically will own a key you need to end a level, or simply present the end of the level itself.
You can configure your keys using Install.exe. Use ENTER to go through doors in order to enter a shop.
As the name Prophecy 1: The Viking Child implies, there were plans to add multiple chapters to the series of Prophecy. However, those games were abandoned, or shelved.
