Long ago, the dragons were defeated, clearing the way for humankind to thrive. The Age of the Great Guilds began when humans organised themselves according to their professions. The guilds were started as a way to guard the secret knowledge of professions.
The guild of weavers eventually perfected their craft to such an extent that they managed to touch the fabric of reality itself. This caused them to be prosecuted for witchcraft, leading the guild to withdraw itself to an remote island.
The members of the guild all were transformed into swans, leaving just Bobbin Threadbare to try and save his guild, and the greater mankind.
At the start, after finding one of the Elders' staff, you have a limited amount of notes you can use to create spells. As you progress and gain experience, though, more notes will become available to you. This in turn will allow you to cast more complex spells.
Spells are learned by interacting with the environment, and consist of 4 notes. Some spells are learned before you can actually cast them, in which case you need to wait until you obtain the ability to play the correct notes. Most spells can also be played backwards, in order to obtain the opposite effect. For instance, the OPEN spell is ECED. Played backwards (DECE), it will end up acting as a CLOSE spell.
Spells are assigned semi-random across games, and would be picked from 3 or 4 possible combinations. Palindrome spells (spells that spell the same backwards) do not have any opposites.
Unfortunately the version offered by GOG and Steam does not include the 30 minute audio introduction that came on CD or casette with the original game. The audio files for it are attached.
