Adventure Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 1

You are Gabriel Knight, writer of horror novels, albeit you're not very succesful. To cover bills, you operate a book store in New Orleans. For a while now, you've been dealing with nightmares you don't understand.

Lately there have been a series of murders in the city, and you're investigating those to see if there might be anything you could use in your latest novel. Luckily you are on great terms with the investigating Detective, Frank Mosley, whom you have known since you were young.

With the help of your assistant Grace and Detective Mosley, Gabriel investigates the murders, and manages to uncover the secrets of an underground voodoo cartel that controls much of the city, including some very powerful people.

But can Gabriel stop the murders and figure out how his family history ties in with the nightmares and put a stop to the murders?


The game was developed in the SCI-engine, and to control Gabriel, you can cycle through icons to perform different actions like walking, questioning, talking, operating, taking, etc. Similar functions exist within the inventory, allowing you to look, read, or open any of the items you encounter on your travels.

Gabriel also has access to a skecthbook, which can be used to document findings, as well as taspe recordings of conversations to re-visit conversations had with different characters. These conversations often can lead you to new locations or allow you to get new information. Most of the conversation topics can be used more than once, to gain additional insights into topics. The characters will typically let you know when you have exhausted whatever information they have.


The voice acting is great, with prominent stars like Tim Curry and Mark Hamill lending their voices to Gabriel and Detective Mosely respectively.

In case you end up getting stuck on Day 6, when the desk sergeant gets back too quickly, in the installation folder of the game (typically /SteamApps/common/Gabriel Knight/GK1/DOSBOX, find and edit the file called dosboxGK.conf. In it, search for cycles. If it's set to max, change that to 10000, to give you extra time to enter Mosley's office. Should you find the game starts acting sluggishly, you can always use CTRL + F12 to speed things up a bit again.

The GOG version uses ScummVM, which might not suffer from the same issue.
