Freddy Pharkas used to be a top gunslinger in his youth, until a particular duel ended with him losing an ear. Freddy took this as a sign, and hung up his holsters and instead pursued a medicla career. After graduating, he purchased himself a pharmacy in the town of Coarsegold, California.
Act 1 of the game basically allows Freddy to explore town and collect some things. When he enters the pharmacy, customers will come in to have their prescriptions filled. By reading the prescription and using your extensive knowledge of medicine (i.e. the Manual), you can then create the proper medications for them in your "lab". At the end of Act 1, the sherrif comes in to shut your store down (and apparent from the number of boarded up places, you're not the first one to suffer that faith).
During Act 2, you have to deal with a number of emergencies plaguing the town. Ranging from horses farting entirely too much, to an oncoming stampede of snals threatening to level the town, you will be kept busy putting out one fire after another (and in one case, a literal one!).
Eventually, you will overhear the Sherrif and the banker who are pissed off that "someone" managed to thwart all their plans so far, and how they will be bringing in some goons to deal with the townsfolk. Madame Ovaree convinces you to recoup your gunslinging days.
Act 3 is used to locate your old gunslinger gear, and to hone your skills. After all, after this many years of not firing a gun, you need the practise beforee taking on a gang of thugs.
All of this builds up to the final showdown in Act 4. Freddy will have to deal with numerous foes, including the mean "Kenny the Kid", who was the man responsible for losing his ear all those years ago.
Can Freddy uncover the plot and figure out why people arer making a move against Coarsegold?
There are 2 different versions of the game; the floppy edition was the first one released in 1993, and did not contain any spoken dialogue (other than the "score" exclamation whenever you manage to advance). The CD-Rom version contains voice acting, but unfortunately misses out on a number of jokes that never made it into speech.
The Floppy version can be grabbed here, while the CD Rom version can be obtained from GOG. Be aware that while playing the Floppy version, it is possible to encounter an issue when changing screens, where the game reports some memory issue. However, by choosing the option "So what?", the game allows you to continue. Should this be a problem, let me know. I own the game on floppy disks, and could always make a fresh copy.
